On 15 October, from 1 pm to 2 pm, there will be another session of the Reading Club, this time dedicated to Utopias and Dystopias.
For this session, we have invited Fátima Vieira, Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, who served as Vice-Rector for Culture and Museums at the University of Porto from 2018 to 2026. The session will be moderated by Jaime Cardoso, Full Professor at FEUP. The session will take place in Room C003.
Utopia represents the idea of an ideal society, where there is harmony, justice and happiness. It is a world imagined as perfect, which often serves to make us reflect on what we would like to improve in our own society.
Dystopia, on the other hand, depicts a future or a society that appears organised, but is characterised by oppression, inequality, control or the loss of freedom.
Ultimately, utopia and dystopia are two ways of imagining the future. Whilst one shows us what we wish to achieve, the other warns us of what we must avoid.
For this session, the speaker proposes the reading of two excerpts from the following works:
- Aqueles que abandonam Omelasby Ursula Le Guin
- O conto da ilha desconhecida by José Saramago
These two extracts are available to download in the Files menu after this text.
