FEUP Reading Club: Artificial Intelligence: Literary Degeneration? || 14 May at ria? || 14 de maio às 13h00 || Sala I-105

On 14 May, from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm, another session of the Reading Club will take place, this time dedicated to Artificial Intelligence.

For this session, we have invited Arlindo Oliveira, president of INESC. The session will be moderated by Gabriel David, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at FEUP. The session will take place in Room I-105.

Arlindo Oliveira is the author of the book Generative Artificial Intelligence and will lead this discussion on our future in the Age of AI.

Synopsis of the book:

In the field of artificial intelligence, the future is full of unknowns. One of them, perhaps the most important, is whether machines will ever be capable of being intelligent, of thinking and even of feeling, just like human beings. The answers today lie in generative artificial intelligence, a technology resulting from many decades of research in the field of machine learning and the subject of intense attention since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022.

This essay situates this technology within the broader context of artificial intelligence, describes the underlying methodologies and algorithms in an accessible way, lists some of its applications, and analyses potential future developments and risks.

Will machines one day have rights and obligations like us?

It is worth thinking about this.

Join us for this Book Club session and come to Level 0 of the library to see the selection of books we’ve put together for you.
