On the 23rd of November, from 1pm to 2pm, another edition of the FEUP Reading Club will take place. The session will be conducted by Carlos Fiolhais, retired Professor from the University of Coimbra who "visits" the work of Rómulo de Carvalho. The moderator will be Rui Calçada, Professor and Director of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. This edition of the Reading Club will take place in the Atos Room – Building A.
Carlos Fiolhais
Born in Lisbon in 1956, he is a retired Full Professor of Physics at the University of Coimbra. After receiving his PhD in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, he founded the Centre for Computational Physics at that University, where he installed the largest Portuguese computer. He created and directed the Centro Ciência Viva Rómulo de Carvalho in Coimbra. He was Director of the General Library of the University of Coimbra. He directed the journal Gazeta de Física of the Portuguese Physical Society. He is the author of numerous scientific (one of which with more than 23,000 citations, the most cited article by an author in a national institution), pedagogical and divulgation articles. He has published over 60 books, including Física Divertida, Nova Física Divertida, Inimigos da Ciência (Gradiva), História da Ciência em Portugal (Arranha-Céus); Ciência em Portugal (Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos); Ciência a Brincar (Bizâncio); textbooks (Texto Editores and Gulbenkian). He was a columnist for the newspapers Público, Sol, I and Correio da Manhã. He has directed the Knowledge programmes of the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation and runs Gradiva's Ciência Aberta collection. He has won, among others, the prizes: União Latina for scientific translation, SIC's Golden Globe in Science, Forum Innovation III Millennium, Rómulo de Carvalho from the University of Évora and the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
Rómulo de Carvalho
Lisbon (24/11/1906 to 19/02/1997)
Poet, dramatic author, scientist and historian, graduated in Physics and Chemistry at the University of Porto, he was a teacher, scientific disseminator and researcher in the history of science. At the age of fifty, he started publishing literature, under the pseudonym of António Gedeão. His poems of simple language, emotive and of intelligent sensitivity with humanistic values have achieved great popularity.
