The 25th April is an emblematic date in Portuguese history, marking the end of a dark period of dictatorship and the beginning of an era of freedom and democracy. Known as “The Carnation Revolution”, this popular uprising, led by progressive soldiers, put an end to almost five decades of authoritarian rule, inaugurating a new phase in the country's history.
Today, the 25th April is celebrated as a bank holiday in Portugal, not only to remember the historical events that led to the fall of the dictatorship, but also to celebrate the values of freedom, democracy and equality. It's a time to reflect on the achievements that have been made and the challenges that remain in building a fairer and more inclusive society.
Come and discover on the ground floor, some of the books that censorship hid during this period, and which the library is showing today to mark the occasion.
Happy reading!
